A Method Statement (often called a Safe System of Work) is a document that describes how a specific task or work activity will be carried out safely. It complements a risk assessment and is commonly required by principal contractors before operatives are permitted to begin higher-risk activities on site.

The frequency of safety audits depends on the nature of the work, the level of risk, and regulatory requirements. On active construction sites, regular audits — often monthly or quarterly — are recommended. For occupied buildings, annual health and safety reviews are common, with additional audits following incidents or significant changes to operations.

RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013) requires employers and those in control of premises to report specified workplace accidents, occupational diseases, and dangerous occurrences to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
